Guest Quarters: Perfection

PERFECT IS BORING

There is beauty in imperfection. This statement is strong, powerful and dynamic. There IS beauty in imperfection. Some might say, “Please, there is no such thing as being beautiful and being imperfect,” or they may say, “If you have imperfections then you aren’t perfect and therefore you aren’t beautiful.”

They are wrong – so very wrong.

I’m a perfectionist – die hard perfectionist to the core. I don’t know where I learned my ability to be so hard on myself. But I have been a perfectionist for as long as I can remember. It’s a blessing and a curse, but more of a curse. Perfectionism, I have learned, keeps you boxed in. It keeps you never wanting to cross the line. It keeps you stressed. It keeps you confined. As told to me from a wise friend, Perfectionism is a trap. In your mind, it causes you to live in a tightly wound section of reality that you must live up to very strict standards. And when you don’t live up to these perfectionist standards it causes stress, humiliation, sadness, anger, confusion, anxiety, depression and other negative behaviors and reactions in your life, because deep down in your soul you know that you cannot and will never be perfect.

Why would you want to be boxed in, stressed and confined? Why would you want to stay on this side of the line when you have so much life to live on this side and that side? Why would you want to walk such a tight line?

Being perfect is overrated. Being perfect is boring. Being real – who you truly are – is beautiful. Making mistakes is beautiful. Imperfections are beautiful. You’re life story, your trials and tribulations, the good and the bad – they’re ALL beautiful. Your imperfections are a part of YOU and they make you real. THAT makes you beautiful.

When you let go of your inhibitions, when you embrace your imperfections, when you love yourself for who and what you are – that is when you are real, that is when you are true, and that is when you are truly beautiful.
