Indies of the Week: Snarky Cards/Arcadia Aromatics - March 6, 2009
She’s crass, she’s wild, she’s wicked. Who am I talking about? Alisa Starr of Snarky Cards. I guess I should mention that she’s snarky too.
Snarky Cards has a card for every occasion…and I mean EVERY occasion. Not for the timid, Alisa’s cards will give you a laugh on the darkest of days. The DARKEST of days. I really can’t explain better than Alisa can…that is when she is taking a break from touring Portland’s bar scene with a box of cards around her neck (remember the cigarette girls?). Now…think cards. According to Ms. Starr, “I’ve always told people the brutally honest truth. For most of my life it’s gotten me in trouble. But I don’t really know how else to be. Saying what’s really going on is the only way I know how to deal with things.”
“I try to soften it. Sometimes I sing it or put it next to a pretty picture, or give it a cute nickname. “Who’s my little passive aggressive cutie-pie?” I coo to deserving friends over the phone.”
“Over the years I’ve noticed that other people don’t have the gift I do for saying exactly what is happening. And sometimes it means that they have to have sex with people they dislike for a long time, or hang onto crappy jobs, or confidence-anhilating stress.” “So I decided to enable you, the coolest people of the world. So that your interactions as clear and true and hilarious and uncomfortable as mine often are. And you won’t be trapped in a situation you don’t like because you can’t say how you feel.” “And just so you know…enabling you has enabled me. Now that all I do is sell brutally honest greeting cards, people expect me to tell the truth. I don’t get in trouble anymore. People who spend time with me know what they’re getting themselves into. And they dig it.” “I hope my cards help you dump someone not cool enough for you, or confess to pet murder or establish your boyfriend’s true sexual preference.” With categories such as Break Up and Divorce, This Economy Sucks, Drinking Drugs & Sex, Your Scary Family, Hitting on You or Body Functions, you are certain…absolutely certain…to find just the right greeting card. Each card is made even sweeter by the fact that it’s typed out just for you on a real live typewriter. Remember those? And if you need a good chuckle (and can put up with absolute unadulterated boldness)…now, don’t say I didn’t warn you…then get yourself over to her blog and try to keep a straight face.
We’ve featured Arcadia Aromatics before and were thrilled when owner Lissa Lee asked us to check out some of her fun spring scented products. In all honesty, everything that Arcadia makes is very appealing…it’s just a question of choosing what appeals to you.
First we tried the Orange Roughy Sea Salt Bar. No, it does not smell like fish. It’s made with sweet orange & tangerine essential oils. The bar has a delightful orange scent and will aid in smoothing your skin. It gently exfoliates and leaves a milky white lotion behind. Your skin will be thankful & you’ll start getting in that warm weather mood. More cheers go to their Sugar Whip scented in Mango Mandarin. If you aren’t familiar with sugar scrubs, these are a good way to work off dead skin & leave smooth skin it its place. The whip contains coconut oil along with the salt. Mango Mandarin is a happy happy scent…your mood will be uplifted just like with the Orange Roughy (which is not a fish…lol).
You can complete all of this happiness (can you stand it?) with Body Sorbet scented in Ambrosia. I love this stuff. It’s summer in a jar. Made with avocado oil and vitamin E, this moisturizer is so light on your skin & disappears quickly. If you are thinking about adding to your spring beauty collection, it will take you from the end of winter and on into spring & summer. Well, if it lasts that long. Then you have to purchase another jar.
Take a look…wonderful products can be found at Arcadia.
