Guest Quarters: Adam Melinger - September 25, 2008This coming week starts October…Breast Cancer Awareness month. In honor of this, Adam Melinger of RedWagonPresents is our Guest Editor. Adam gives some great ideas for making purchases that will help to benefit breast cancer research. Gift baskets without that one sucky item in them. We at RedWagonPresents agree with this recent review of our site! Like most people, we rarely like receiving gift baskets with random fruit, chocolate and cheese. We also always thought sending one was impersonal. So we tried to think of something ‘novel’ in gift baskets. We really began to think about gift baskets for new babies. After having two boys, there were only a few new baby gifts that we received that really stood out. One was a gift that came with some classic children’s books. With that in mind, we wanted to take it one step further. Rather then sending the books in a plain wicker basket or generic box (it either gets thrown away or shoved in a closet) we decided to wrap everything into a Radio Flyer wagon. This now became two gifts in one. Classic children’s books on the shelf – classic toy to pull around. Our site currently has 14 different theme wagons such as Dr. Seuss, Baby Einstein and Sesame Street.
What if we expand this gift idea to adults? Wouldn’t it be great to receive a gift – two gifts rather – where you would always remember the recipient? Whimsical books on golf, motherhood, cooking, football and much more all arrive in a theme related, keepsake basket or container.
And so RedWagonPresents began.
We also believe in giving back and in doing so, we have partnered with Light One Little Candle Foundation. LOLC was founded by a young mother fighting breast cancer who wanted to leave a legacy of memories and life lessons to her daughter. The foundation was designed to encourage cancer patients who are caregivers to continue to bond with their children throughout the illness by reading classic and funny stories. RedWagon developed the Joelle basket named after the founder of LOLC – Joelle Pauporte. The Joelle basket contains some classic children’s books, a candle, a journal and more and makes the ideal gift for new moms or baby showers. 15% of our net proceeds of the Joelle basket are donated to LOLC throughout the year. In addition, through October, our company is donating 10% of our net proceeds on ALL purchases to the foundation. And this is the story of RedWagonPresents – a mom and pop business looking to change the face of the gift basket industry and give something back.
