Meaningful Gift-Giving: Yes, You Can Do It For Under $30

No, we are not going to talk about our economic downturn. Too much talk of that at the moment. Actually, the $30 price point for a gift represents our mental price barrier no matter what the economic conditions. So, what does $30 buy these days? Actually quite a lot, particularly if you shop Wal-Mart (well, we all prefer Target if we need to shop in that category, don’t we?) or go for anything that is made in China. Which is fine for our every day, but for gift giving? Forget it. That is totally uninspired.

To use the old cliché, The Succulent Wife firmly believes that gift giving is about the thought and not about the price. But the “thought” is what needs to be cultivated here. Brought to the next level for meaning, thoughtfulness and showing that you care.

A little trip around the Wickedly Chic merchants show us how easy it is. Buying handmade or indie design immediately increases the value of the gift. Why? Because the recipient will know that is was not just selected in a random department store. It was “shopped for”...just for them. The item is not generic and it’s made by a real person. It has a story. Even if the gifts are not exactly hand-crafted (like printed stationery), the fact that they are sold in these independent shops gives them much more allure. You know that every item in these stores has been hand-picked…shall we say curated?...to bring you the most unique, and often, one-of-a-kind offering.

Jewelry is always a thoughtful idea. It says “here’s something pretty to make you feel pretty”. Take a look at these finds:

Weekend Jewelry Peach pearl earrings: $30.00

Weekend Jewelry White hearts $30.00

Dornick Designs Blueberry earrings $14.00

Dornick Designs Leather and Lace necklace $21.00

The Succulent Wife $18.00 by Eutectic

Also, remember that while you might be paying for shipping, you will most likely not be paying sales taxes. It will probably almost even out. Many retailers offer free shipping. That’s just another bonus!

Beauty and Spa gift ideas are always thoughtful. Etiquette would dictate that you don’t get too personal with spa gifts if they are meant for someone you don’t know so well…but The Succulent Wife believes that gorgeously packaged soaps or candles are always appropriate. Oh, and make for perfect hostess gifts, by the way…

Barcelona Bath & Body Soap Duos $12.00

Barcelona Bath & Body Sachet Tapas set – $25.00

Barcelona Bath & Body Candles $24.00

Flower Peddler Bath Bombs $10.50

For kids:

Flower Peddler Garden Bugx gift set $30.00

The Succulent Wife – Lavender flax seed eye pillow $24

Guys are hard to buy for in the indie design category…if you are looking for something other than a t-shirt. Here are a couple of original and practical ideas in the under $30 range:

Flower Peddler ok, $32 but…this is a great gift set that can be used for travel. Perfect gift for the big brother or from the little kid to their parent.

The Succulent Wife $24/set Hand Etched Glasses.

Note cards and stationery are a classic offering that will always be appreciated. It says, “I know that you are of the classy type that sends hand-written notes”. Most stationery sets come in their own little boxes. All you need to do is tie a ribbon and you’re set to go. Here are some classy and bright choices:

Tobi Wood Designs $16.00

The Succulent Wife $19.50

The Succulent Wife $13.00

And cute little “somethings” in other categories include fashion accessories and items for the little wee ones:

MaryMo Reversible Tote Bag $30.00

MaryMo Ponytail Holders $10.00

The Succulent Wife – $24 Skull Onesie

The Succulent Wife $24 Mini tote and matching barrette

The Succulent Wife $18.00 Mini Collage

One of the designers highlighted here says it best. Kathy Hardy of Dornick Designs has a motto that says, “People will forget what you say, people will forget what you do, but people will always remember how you made them feel”.

The lesson in meaningful gift-giving is now over. We know that you totally get it!
