Indie Kitchen Style…

Okay, so I don’t cook. I mean, I do because I have to. I have 2 kids so I do feed them from the necessary food groups (there are 4 of them right?). But even then it’s a lost cause most of the time. Last night I made scallops and salmon, a nice meal, and my 2 year old just asks for mustard. Everything has to be dipped in mustard. Too funny! What’s my point… I may not use all of the fancy appliances and cook amazing concoctions but I have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. So the way it looks is of the utmost importance, right? And the way I look in it (pretending to know my way around). So I love my kitchen’s colors (black, white and red), the layout and the cute wire fruit holder and vintage bread and cracker bins…

BUT as I was cleaning up the kitchen last night I realized that my dishtowels are getting old. I leave them out on the counter (of course they color coordinate) but they’re so boring. Not to worry Jen (I said to myself), because I heard through the grapevine (thank god for the grapevine) that Jen of Sweet Pea Handcrafts has designed a new line of retro kitchen accessories! Jen’s a cool grad student who crafts these fabulous designs as a means of stress release. Well, she’s relieved my where-do-I-find-cool-dishtowels-and-stuff stress, that’s for sure! I went to her site & what to my delightful surprise do I find? Funky white dish towels with black retro dots and classic red trim… yay, my colors!

Phew, crisis averted. But Jen offers so much more. With totally charming packaging, Jen has gift sets that are perfect to give hostesses or whoever. Aprons, potholders, dinner & cocktail napkins round out her hand-made collection. She’s put her graphic design skills to work to also offer retro recipe cards. Yes, I hear people still use those! (just not me) So I think I better start reading Jen’s “Cooking Blog” for some tips. I’ll work really hard, make a new yummy dish and my son will drench it in mustard.

When I have a get together, people always end up gathering in the kitchen. Even though I usually order food instead of cooking it, I still have to get it ready and set it up, right? To avoid any spillage on my pretty hostess outfit of the day, I should be oh so stylish and don this Bellissima Hostess Apron by Bella Style Boutique. It’s hand-made with heavy weight cotton. For us clumsy folks who will undoubtedly stain the poor thing, it has Scotchguard “to help keep it washable, wearable and wonderful!”

So what else can I add to my kitchen décor to really funk it up? Eye Pop Art has the answer. Slap this Raspberry Record Bowl down on my center island and it’s a sure-fire conversation piece. It’s hand-painted with acrylics, heated and then sculpted into a flower-like shape. The hole is sealed up so it’s water tight and the entire bowl is sealed so it’s totally functional. Nice!

Oh, before I go I have to tell you, my mom just bought me a dish towel that says “born to shop, forced to cook”. Oh, how appropriate.

Remember girls, shop indie. It’s just better and a lot more fun.
